january 10, 2003:

photo by jenny mazanek. the clarendon hills flew home and spent two chilly weeks in chicago. it snowed on christmas day. pepito played lots of risk and illuminati with his siblings kara and nathan. christine (with family and friends) finally embarked upon her christmas yule log hunt. elbert played our new record for his parents to which his mom had the puzzling response, "it sounds like chinese new year." winters in the midwest are so conducive for reading. elbert cozied up with "post office" and "hollywood" by charles bukowski. christine finally cracked open "100 years of solitude" by gabriel garcia marquez. and pepito thumbed his nose at tolkien and re-read margaret weis and tracy hickman's epic dragonlance chronicles trilogy.

friend, abbas jaffary, however, would not permit the c-hills to be sedentary bookworms their entire time in chicago. subsequently, he single-handedly organized and set-up the clarendon hills first (and probably only) show in chicago ever. it was at a kindercare learning center-- just a few blocks from christine's parents' house. the kids (ages 5-10) had just returned from a fieldtrip to the IMAX theater where "the lion king" had been showing. surely, a tough act for anyone to follow, but the c-hills intrepidly played five short ditties. there were many highlights: passing out extra instruments (cowbell, triangle, snare drum, bongos, maracas, wooden blocks, etc) for the kids to bang along with, the jumping up and down and high pitched shrieking, the girl covering her ears and crying, and of course, the post-show apple juice with cheese and crackers. surprisingly, the c-hills were not the first band to ever play mr. abbas' kindercare class. harlow from VH1's show "bands on the run" fame, had made an earlier visit. no joke.

in other news: christine graduated and received her final semester grades back from uc berkeley: 2 A's and an A-. not too shabby, considering the c-hills played three shows during final exam week. pepito is contemplating law school and elbert is dreaming about dropping out of stanford. such heady academic melodrama. stay tuned for more pulse-pounding ivory tower action...

oh yes. the c-hills would like to say:
happy new year!

first show of the new year:

*** SATURDAY, JANUARY 18th @ cloyne court co-op, 2600 ridge, berkeley. all ages. 9pm. free. ***
the stars are aligning themselves for a musical lovefest this saturday in the cloyne court dungeon! its a rare show indeed where the c-hills are madly infatuated with each and every member of each band playing. this includes: kendra, jj, and aaron of knulla roofs, dan, adrienne, chris w., and chris g., of citizens here and abroad (comprised of one half dealership / one half secadora), and if the c-hills are lucky, their better half the skyflakes might show up and play too.
