february 21, 2003:

aaron gets it on. the clarendon hills were spotted on valentine's day at a late night basement make-out party at the mysterious cereal factory. newly annoited by rolling stone magazine rock stars, knulla roofs made a special musical appearence, followed by the irrepressible blanche devereaux, and soon to be legendary TLC tribute band poseur posse. however, the hottest ticket of the evening belonged to the scandalous kissing booth that stood invitingly in the back.

the next morning, elbert, pepito and christine were out cold until 2pm, but finally managed to get off their lazy asses and dust off the digital 8 track from the closet. the clarendon hills are teaming up with comic wunderkind hellen jo for a split record / comic book: four songs accompanied by four stories. six hours of tangled cables, creative mic positioning, and hysterical vocal out takes later, the clarendon hills polished off the beginnings of "so alone" and "no."

christine. notes. elbert and christine. elbert. elbert and christine. pepito, elbert, and christine.

nevin. two weeks ago, with some vehicular and navigatory assistance from the skyflakes, the clarendon hills caravan rolled into starry skied santa cruz late friday night for an out of control show at the infamous brommer house-- a tiny room, amazing bands (texas sexes and half czar), over-cranked amps, free flowin' booze, a portable fog machine, and kids bouncing off walls. a sponatenous drunken chorus line complete with attempted synchronized high kicks broke out during the c-hills. despite the casualty of a shattered window resulting in some nasty bloody cuts, the party ended with everyone breathless, smiling, and woozy. among those dancing was the one and only heather blotto which was particularly redeeming since al blotto once dismissed the clarendon hills as "soft." ha. redemption!

a few hours before the saturday night show, the c-hills and skyflakes splurged on a $120 greek feast at vasili's. they also stopped by comic wonderland, atlantis fantasy world in downtown santa cruz, to say "hi" to soelle, and help hellen drop off copies of komisches buch #2. the c-hills played with the scratchies and profundo rossi in a uc santa cruz classroom below a dining hall. very cool.

no shows until march. instead, the c-hills with some of their nearest and dearest will be hitting the slopes of tahoe for snowball fights and extreme sledding.

spring is coming:

*** TUESDAY, MARCH 18th @ club galia, san francisco. 8pm. $5. 21+. ***
this show will be interesting indeed. yet another honory clarendon hills is annoited, as comrade antares (from the late, great primitivo) will be guest drumming, as christine is chilling in chicago. the c-hills have already picked out a wig and outfit for him. second string heroes, mud, and megababe (from japan) are playing too.

*** THURSDAY, MARCH 20th @ oakland metro, oakland. 9pm. $7. all ages. ***
imagine a show you could proudly bring home to mom and dad's for dinner. with culumative GPAs higher than your average band, the skyflakes, knulla roofs, grand unified theory, and robert+karen are convening a study session to prepare for the release of undeteced plagiarism's cd compilation entitled "neighbourhood watch." come get the cd comp full of bands with nerds you probably went to high school with.

*** SUNDAY, MARCH 30th @ mission records, san francisco. 4pm. $5. all ages. ***
anarchy in the PRC: beijing punk rock is once again hitting american soil. brain failure and hang on the box have somehow swindled themselves some government issue passports and are now on a collision course to fuck shit up here communist style. pepito saw these bands back in the day in china, and declares this show not to be missed for anything. tai niubi le!

february 3, 2003:

elbert needed a hair cut; kendra needed a trim. the clarendon hills needed a show; knulla roofs needed a show. one stroke of genius later, and the c-hills and k-roofs were throwing a rock n roll hair cutting party down in the dungeon of cloyne. kendra went first and amidst chants of "mullet core! mullet core!" let christine chop locks of her hair onstage in between knulla roofs' songs. three songs into the c-hills set, a mortified elbert had his hair shorn into a savage tri-hawk by a gleefully drunk jj of knulla roofs. primitivo were too busy hypnotizing everyone with their epic lo-fi drugged out pop songs for haircuts. no one dared touch the tresses of citizens here and abroad, as one shouldn't meddle with fashionable perfection.

primitivo. elbert. elbert. elbert. chris and kendra.

raina and julie. APE 2003 weekend was a blast-- lots of cool comics, lots of cool kids. after strutting over to hellen jo's table to say "hi," and pick up the latest issue of komisches buch, christine and pepito had the extraordinary fortune of running into zinesters julie kim and raina lee. who says the internet can't lead to strange, unexpected encounters of mutually giddy recognition? better yet, raina's zine "1-up" might just give gamegirl advance a run for the money in the feminine video game junkie department. adrian tomine was a no-show this year, so christine couldn't kick his ass. pepito, on the other hand, was pummelled by the amazing spiderman.

pepito and spiderman. the night before, the clarendon hills played a quiet, subdued set at the ritzy cartoon art museum, yet somehow still managed to clear the room of artists, patrons and party-goers in record time! everyone was real polite when tactfully stepping around the c-hills to peer at the exhibitions on the wall behind them. the c-hills did spot local comic boy wonder, jason shiga, smiling and tapping his foot for a brief bit. and during "you & i" legendary comic historian, scott mccloud, walked right by as he made a bee-line for the open bar. afterwards, behind the safe, noise proof glass windows of mel's diner,
the c-hills and hellen witnessed a surreal lynching of five city girls on one.

miscellaneous: elbert is listening to husker du and the oblivians. pepito is digging the notwist and hot hot heat. christine is cutting hair by appointment only. pepito and elbert finally completed the first two levels of contra: shattered soldier. christine and pepito visited otsu-- all vegan shoewear! finally, the c-hills won 2 tickets to go see erasure-- the fight is on to see who ends up getting to get their 80s synth-pop dance on.

the clarendon hills will be appearing on two upcoming compilation cds: "neighbourhood watch" on undetected plagiarism and "underground screams" on asian man records.

santa cruz here we come:

*** FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7th @ the brommer house, 1515 brommer, santa cruz. 8pm. free. ***
the clarendon hills embark on a weekend outing down to santa cruz. friday night is some crazy house party with three other bands. at the moment, the c-hills aren't even sure how to get there or who else is playing. how typical!

*** SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8th @ the porter soundbox, uc santa cruz. 8:30pm. free. ***
saturday night, the c-hills will be running around uc santa cruz and playing a show with the scratchies, profondo rossi, and the gales. allegedly, the skyflakes are going to show them around their old stomping grounds. if anyone else wants to hang with the c-hills, get in touch! they'll treat you to brunch. for real!
