it has been a splendid summer for documentaries. "capturing the friedmans" is the most painfully raw documentary in recent memory. how could a film centered on child pornography, molestation charges, and the complete destruction of a dysfunctional, eccentric jewish family not be? it is arguably the quintessential american documentary ("hands on hard body" is a close second, while "bowling for columbine" is still god awful fluff.) "the weather underground" captures the rise and fall of the vietnam-era radical students movement who sought to overthrow the US government via violence and bombing government buildings. it is a classic example of why liberal social movements invariably collapse upon themselves. "spellbound" is the feel good documentary of the year, as it follows the hearts and minds of eight precocious teens and their journey to the 1999 national spelling bee. try spelling "logorrhea," quick!
the only drawback about going on tour is all the fantastic shows you miss back home. the c-hills have been feverishly making up for lost time. a noise pop party broke out at the cereal factory where a resurrected primitivo played with all-star fashionistas citizens here and abroad and the stratford 4. a week later at gilman, extreme elvis hijacked the stage before the locust and erase errata and unapologetically tossed a shit-filled diaper at a horrified front row of hipsters. pepito counted at least a dozen fifteen year old drummers huddled in hero worship around zach when spazz gods hella played. the next evening, pepito was spotted dancing to trin tran and numbers at their cozy little show at the ramp. finally, the lucksmiths playing the hemlock at the stroke of midnight to fifty swooning kids was pure magic.
who else was at the "underground" party that went down two weekends ago deep in the portrero district cal train's tunnel? it was so dark, the clarendon hills couldn't see a thing. before the cops came to bust up the block rockin' beats, alcohol, bonfires, and illegal fireworks, pepito took two photos: far-away and close-up.
asian man records is selling the c-hills record "all day, all night, all right" for a measly $5. order: here.

the clarendon hills were invited to play the final days of the asians in indie rock (A.I.R.) west coast tour with jenny choi, scrabbel, short round, and
julie plug. according to jenny, "The tour hopes to give voice to the often silent model minority, bringing awareness to the fact that there are Asian faces everywhere rocking out loud, and contributing to what makes our music so outstanding." consequently, the c-hills will be bringing their bowls of rice, calculators, and perfect SAT scores on tour to smash stereotypes everywhere!
